Who We Are

Managed by the Susquehanna Group of the Sierra Club, Move Out Project (MOP) is a volunteer-run initiative aimed at diverting waste from the landfill and giving back to the community during Spring move out. During the month of May, volunteers pick up unwanted but usable items from students moving out of their college housing. The items are then sorted and donated to organizations in the greater Binghamton area who then disperse them to community members. More…

What We Do

We collect items from students moving out of their college housing and we donate them back into the community.

How We Do It

We deploy an army of volunteers to collect, sort, and distribute the items over the span of a month.

Why We Do It

Our aim is to divert quality, usable items from the landfill and give back to those in our community who could use them.

Thank you to Professor Pitarresi for welcoming the MOP team to the classroom last week! ✏️📚

Chris and Christina walked the students through an activity known as “reverse brainstorming” where we try to find a solution to the opposite problem that we want to solve, and then reverse it. This helps with thinking outside of the box when you’re in a rut. The students came up with some great ideas- check out the resulting affinity map!

Thanks, students, for wanting to help us reduce waste at the end of the year (even though Waste Olympics sounds kinda fun?)

TOMORROW! The Binghamton El Charcón Sister City P

TOMORROW! The Binghamton El Charcón Sister City Project is hosting their annual yard sale at 34 Blackstone Avenue in Binghamton. All proceeds go directly to El Charcón, a small city in El Salvador, which has been a sister city to Binghamton for many years. Stop by and find a treasure!

During our May 2023 collection cycle, we received

During our May 2023 collection cycle, we received over 18,000 pounds of donations from students, and were able to distribute nearly all of it to our community donation partners. Bearcats, you are AWESOME!

Some folks we talked to at #UFest were surprised to learn that clothing was our biggest donation category this year, coming in at a whopping 4,440 pounds! Comment down below if you’re surprised where any of these categories fall in the ranking 👇

Last month, our very own Chris Harasta traveled to Colorado to receive the 2023 Heroes of Everyday Life® award from the Sodexo Stop Hunger Foundation. This is a prestigious award given to 5 Sodexo employees across the country who go above and beyond to help combat food insecurity.

Not only is Chris a full-time Sodexo manager while working tirelessly to coordinate the Move Out Project all year round, but he is involved with many other community initiatives all aimed at bridging his passions of sustainability and food security, making him the perfect candidate for this award. Happy Mother’s Day from the MOP team 💐💛

Many of our wonderful volunteers are mothers, and being in the thick of the project, there was still work to be done today.

Our Logistics Coordinator, Chris, had the lovely idea of setting up a surprise Mother’s Day brunch so that even though we had to work today, our MOP mothers would know they are appreciated. Chris and Juniper arrived early to whip up a delicious meal on a stovetop brought from home. And thanks to our student donors, we were able to set up a beautiful tabletop with all of your donations right in our sorting facility! (complete with a Halloween table cloth 🤣)

Need to safely dispose of your lithium batteries or rechargeable devices before the end of the semester? 💻📱🎧

Bring your lithium batteries and rechargeable devices, such as phones, laptops, and AirPods, to a tent on May 10th and 11th from 2-5 pm.

You can also drop your lithium batteries in one of our drop off bins conveniently located throughout campus.

Spring move-out collection starts tomorrow! If you live on campus, there are two ways you can donate:

🔹Drop off your items at a bin: From May 5 to May 11, there will be bins conveniently located at the following locations:
📍 Appalachian Dining Hall
📍 Hinman Dining Hall
📍 C4 Multi-purpose Room
📍 Hillside Commons
📍 CIW Iroquois Commons
📍 Susquehanna Coffee House (Brandywine)

🔹Drop off your items at a tent: On May 10 and 11 there will be 5 tents on campus from 2 PM to 5 PM. There will be a tent at the following locations:

Got extra textbooks at the end of the semester? Don’t throw them away, donate them to the Move Out Project! Unlike other donations, MOP sells your textbooks to raise funds for the project, and it is one of our only funding sources.

Instead of ending up in the landfill, your textbooks will be used for a good cause 😁📚
