Who We Are

Managed by the Susquehanna Group of the Sierra Club, Move Out Project (MOP) is a volunteer-run initiative aimed at diverting waste from the landfill and giving back to the community during Spring move out. During the month of May, volunteers pick up unwanted but usable items from students moving out of their college housing. The items are then sorted and donated to organizations in the greater Binghamton area who then disperse them to community members. More…

We collect items from students moving out of their college housing and we donate them back into the community.

How We Do It

We deploy an army of volunteers to collect, sort, and distribute the items over the span of a month.

Why We Do It

Our aim is to divert quality, usable items from the landfill and give back to those in our community who could use them.

Last week, we held our annual “Shopping Days”

Last week, we held our annual “Shopping Days” where local nonprofits come and shop for free amongst the items donated by students. In two days, over 19,000 pounds of items were donated back into the community! 🤯

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers for getting the donations ready, to our donation partners for your partnership and service to the community, and to our students who donated all of these wonderful items. And special thanks to Coordinator Kate Harasta for organizing our Shopping Days! It takes a village 💚

Today is the day we have been waiting for all month….our first Shopping Day! Shopping Days are when nonprofits come in and “shop” for free from the donations we’ve collected. They take them back to their organizations and later distribute them to the clients they serve.

Check out the story of “Ted”, a giant teddy bear that was donated to MOP a few years ago. This is just one of the countless stories we’ve heard from our donation partners on the impact these donations have. Students, your donations make a difference 🫶
